When I first arrived at the 3Pillars Awards, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I thought it might be formal, maybe even overwhelming. What I discovered was the opposite: it was uplifting, fun, and full of energy. The atmosphere felt like family, warm, welcoming, and genuinely engaging.
One of the highlights for me was hearing from the men who came from HMP Sudbury, where I had previously been. Seeing how well they are doing, and hearing them share their progress, was really special. I had first read about Ben’s record in Inside Time, and then meeting him in person brought everything full circle.
Another unforgettable moment was meeting Fay, the 3Pillars Pre/Post Custody Lead, who has supported me both in the lead-up to release and while facing challenges in the community. From the moment I arrived, I was looking out for her, and when we finally met it felt significant. We spoke for a long time about everything I’ve been through, and the progress I’ve made in rebuilding my life. It was a powerful, emotional conversation, one that almost brought me to tears.
And then, when my own name was called for an award, I was stunned. I hadn’t expected it at all. Every time I look at that award now, I can’t help but smile. It’s a reminder of what I’ve achieved and, more importantly, that others have recognised it too. That matters to me, because so often in life I’ve felt overlooked. In that moment, I truly felt seen.
The 3Pillars Awards was more than just an event; it was a celebration of journeys, resilience, and hope. I left not only with an award, but with a renewed sense of motivation to keep moving forward; for myself, and for the people whose stories continue to inspire me every day.
Today, I have a job, and this month I’m starting back at university to study aerospace engineering. There were moments over the past couple of years when I didn’t believe it was possible to get my life back. But with the help of 3Pillars, I am getting there; step by step.
